Clarence Edgar Phillis was born on 31 May 1901 in Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio to John C. Phillis and Julia A. Thomas.1 Clarence’s family moved from Ohio to Caney, Montgomery County, Kansas when he was four years old and then on to Dewey, Washington County, Oklahoma a few years later.2

The youngest of John and Julia’s seven sons, Clarence must have enjoyed hearing the stories of his older brother’s travels when they came home in 1909 for Thanksgiving.3

The family was once again on the move in 1912, relocating to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.4 Clarence’s father, John, died on 30 January 1918 in Chicago and is buried in Montrose Cemetery.5

Following their father’s death, Clarence and his brother, Ralph, lived with their mother, Julia, on the north side of Chicago at 508 Grant Place, and his brother, Howard, and his wife, Ethel, lived in the same building as well.6

Marriage and family

Clarence married Kathlyn Morgan on 22 January 1921 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.7 Clarence and Kathlyn had six known children, Clarence Edgar Jr, Iva/Arva Jane, who died at the age of 11 months, Ethel Helen, a baby boy who died at birth, Julia., and Patricia Ruth.8

Clarence’s mother, Julia A. Thomas Phillis, died on 2o March 1927 in Chicago and is buried in Montrose Cemetery.9

The family lived in Chicago, first at 2407 Flournoy Street, then at 615 Webster, and, when Clarence registered for the draft in 1942, at 1847 Cleveland Avenue.10 As was with much of the world, it must have been an especially trying time for Clarence and Kathlyn as their son, Pfc. Clarence Jr., was wounded during World War II, but survived.11

By 1950, Clarence had contracted tuberculosis and was a patient at the Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium. Kathlyn was living with their daughters, Ethel and Pat, and their families.12

Sadly, Clarence and Kathlyn’s daughter, Ethel Helen, died at the age of 29 on 14 June 1954 in Chicago.13

Clarence Edgar Phillis died on 21 January 1962 at the age of 60 in Chicago.14 Kathlyn Morgan Phillis died at the age of 62 on 25 November 1963 in Chicago.15 Both are buried in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Heights, Cook County, Illinois.16
