Julia Phillis was born on 24 June 1927 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to Clarence Edgar Phillis and Kathlyn Morgan. Julia appears to have been named Ernestine at birth, but her parents changed her name to Julia Marie a couple of weeks later. She later used the middle initial A as an adult.¹

Julia grew up in Chicago with her parents and siblings, Clarence, Helen, and Pat.² Julia married Robert Allan Browne on 28 August 1948 and the couple had six known children and three foster sons.³ The family moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1955.⁴

Julia’s father, Clarence Edgar Phillis, died in 1962 at the age of 60, and her mother, Kathlyn Morgan Philis died in 1963 at the age of 62. Both are buried in Arlington Heights, Illinois.⁵

Robert worked as both general manager of Tip Top Bakers at Ward Baking Company and also as a licensed practical nurse.⁶ Robert Allen Browne died at the age of 63 on 25 November 1988 in South Bend.⁷ Robert is buried in Highland Cemetery in South Bend.⁷

Tragically, Julia and Robert’s son, John P., Bowne, died in 1999 at the age of 45 as the result of a bicycle accident while living and working in Guatemala.⁸

Julia remained in the South Bend area for the remainder of her life.⁹ Julia A. Phillis Browne died on 20 April 2005 at the age of 77 in Mishawaka, Indiana near South Bend.¹⁰
