Whiskey Sour cocktail history
Given the simple ingredients of the Whiskey Sour – whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar – it most likely has been consumed under one name or another, or none, for a very long time. However, it appears to have been quite popular around the time of the United States Civil War.

In Jerry Thomas’ How to Mix Drinks, The Bon-vivant’s Companion published in 1862, he included Gin and Brandy Sours, but not a Whisky Sour on page 59 in the Fixes and Sours section, although it isn’t a big leap to try one with whisky.

The little bit of sugar cuts the tartness to just the right point. A very tasty cocktail.
