Clarence Edgar Phillis “Sonny” Jr was born on 22 May 1921 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to Clarence Edgar Phillis and Kathlyn Morgan.1

Clarence lived with his parents and siblings, Ethel Helen, Julia, and Patricia, in Chicago and, prior to entering the military, worked at Chicago Rug and Furniture Company, which was also the employer of his father.2 Clarence enlisted in the Army on 12 November 1942 and was wounded in September 1944.3
While home in 1945, Clarence had a chat with Stan Hack of the Chicago Cubs.4 Clarence, who was called Sonny, was discharged from the Army on 29 April 1948.5
On 20 May 1948, Clarence married Dorothy Catherine Leidy, and Clarence, Dorothy, and their children lived in Chicago.6 Clarence’s father, Clarence Edgar Phillis, died on 21 January 1962, and his mother, Kathlyn Morgan Phillis, died on 25 November 1963, both in Chicago.7
Clarence Edgar Phillis Jr., died at the age of 57 on 22 March 1979.8 Dorothy Leidy Phillis died on 11 April 1989 in Chicago at the age of 60.9
