The Lyons Family

Members of the Lyons family appear frequently in the Ann M. Hull Diary of 1857. Both of Ann’s sisters, Mary and Fannie, married descendants of the Lyons family. Mary Amanda Hull married Frederick Denison Lyons and Fannie Sophia Hull married Samuel Pettingill Loomis, the son of Betsey Lyons.

Betsey Lyons was born on 2 Nov 1815 in Colrain, Franklin County, Massachusetts to Daniel Lyons and Rebecca Barker. Betsey married Confucius Fitch Loomis and was the mother of Samuel Pettingill Loomis, who married Fannie Sophia Hull. Betsey Lyons Loomis died on 8 Sept 1891 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Daniel Lyons was born 26 May 1778 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Daniel married first to Rebecca Barker on 6 Oct 1799 in Heath, Franklin County, Massachusetts. Rebecca Barker Lyons died on 28 Nov 1819 in Montrose, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

Daniel married second to Anna B. Smith, the sister of Amanda Smith, who married Daniel’s son, David Lyons. Anna B. Smith Lyons died on 8 Feb 1856 in Great Bend and is buried in Great Bend Episcopal Cemetery. Daniel died on 7 Sept 1850 in Great Bend, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania and is buried in Great Bend Episcopal Cemetery.

Mrs. Cynthia Maria Newell
Died, at Owego, NY, Saturday, Jan. 21, 1899, Cynthia Maria Smith widow of Gilbert Newell and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Smith, aged 77 years. She was born in Granville, OH, Sept. 16, 1821, and in her early years her parents moved to their former home in Massachusetts. She and Gilbert Newell were married Dec. 19, 1839 at Sandisfield, Mass., by Rev. James Squires. They came to Owego in the spring of 1857 and resided here until their respective deaths. She became a member of the Baptist church of this village, of which she was a consistent member and highly respected by all. She is survived by three sons, Orvin L., Friend G. and Frank W. of Owego, and one daughter, Mrs. H. G. Crane of Minneapolis, Minn. The funeral was held at 8 p. m. Monday at the residence of her son, Frank W., 115 Franklin street, where her death occurred. Internment was in Evergreen cemetery.
