Almer G. Newell was born on 21 Aug 1823 in Middletown, Windsor County, Vermont to Jacob Newell and Elizabeth Wolcott “Betsey” Manley Newell.1 In 1850, Almer was living with his brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Cynthia Smith Newell, and their family in Pine Plains, New York. Both Gilbert and Almer were working as carpenters.2

Almer and his brothers and father soon moved to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, where Almer married Theda Ann Hubbard. The Newell family lived in Harmony. 3

By 1860, Almer, Theda, and their children, Alice and Myron, had moved to Berkshire, Tioga County, New York, where Almer continued to work as a carpenter.4 On 18 August 1862, Almer enlisted in the Civil War; he was discharged 9 June 1865.5 Following Almer’s return from the war, the family, which now included William and Ollie, remained living in Berkshire until some time in the 1870s when they moved to North Carolina.6 Theda died 20 October 1881 and is buried in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina.7

Almer married second to Mary Sampson on 28 March 1883 in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina.8

Almer G. Newell died on 24 February 1890 in South Greensboro and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina.

Mr. A. G. Newell, an esteemed citizen of this place, died at this residence in South Greensboro, Monday night, after a long illness aged nearly 67 years.9

Mary Louise Sampson Newell died on 10 July 1931 in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina, and is buried in New Garden Friends Cemetery in Greensboro.10
