Charlotte “Lottie” May Allen was born 16 October 1871 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Green B. Allen, a blacksmith, and Emma Sisson.1

Lottie, her parents, and her siblings, Gertrude and Arthur, lived at 118 Fifth Street in New Bedford during her childhood and attended Fifth Street Grammar School.2 Sadly, Lottie’s little brother, Arthur, died at the age of one in 1879.3
Lottie excelled in high school and served as the valedictorian of the New Bedford High School class of 1890.4


Lottie attended the Training School for Teachers in New Bedford with several of her high school classmates, graduating in June of 1892.5

Lottie’s first teaching appointment was at Thompson Street Grammar School in 1892, where she earned $400 per year.6 She transferred to the I. W. Benjamin in 1893, earning $425 per year, and also supplementing her income teaching evenings at Merrimac Street Elementary School, where she earned an additional $3 per week.7 The following year she transferred to Fifth Street School, which was close to her home at 118 Fifth Street, where she lived with her parents, Green and Emma.8

Charlotte never married, lived in New Bedford, and taught school throughout her entire life.9 Charlotte visited with family and friends, her parents, her sister, Gertrude Allen Potter, her aunt, Eliza J. Butts Allen, and her cousin, Mabel Allen Gray and Herman J. Gray, and Carrie Tripp Slocum, wife of Dr. Frederick Slocum throughout the years.10



Charlotte’s mother, Emeline C. “Emma” Sisson Allen, died in 1924, and her father, Green Burgess Allen, died in 1933.11 Both are buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford.12
In 1935, Charlotte attended her 45th high school reunion, shown in the photo 2nd from the left on the front row.13


Charlotte “Lottie” May Allen died in 1954 in New Bedford and is buried in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.14
Charlotte’s sister, Gertrude B. Allen Potter died in 1968 and also is buried in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.15
