Julia Crocker Gifford was born 31 December 1871 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts to William B. Gifford and Mary A. Howland.1 Her family soon moved to New Bedford, where Julia lived with her parents and sister, Susie.2

Julia attended Fifth Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, graduating with the class of 1890.3

Julia became a teacher, earning $4.12 per week in 1891 working at the Fifth Street Evening Elementary School.4

After graduating in June 1892 from the Training School for Teachers in New Bedford with several others from the 1890 New Bedford High School graduating class, Julia taught at Middle Street Grammar School, while continuing to also teach at the Fifth Street Evening Elementary School.5

Julia lived in New Bedford with her parents and sister at the turn of the century.6 Her father, William S. Gifford, died in 1903.7 While Julia appeared to come close to marriage in 1911, she remained single her entire life, teaching in New Bedford and living with her sister and mother until her mother, Mary A. Howland Gifford died in 1923, then residing with her sister for the remainder of her life.8

In 1935, Julia attended her 45th high school reunion; she is on the back row, fourth from left in the reunion photo.9

Julia’s sister, Susan Bosworth Gifford, died in 1950 in New Bedford and is buried in South Dartmouth Cemetery in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.10

Julia Clifford Gifford died in 1952 in Taunton and is also buried in South Dartmouth Cemetery in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.11
