Ruth Emma Pease was born 10 June 1871 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to James H. Pease and Lucinda C. Perry.1

In her childhood, Ruth lived with her parents and brother, James, at 242 County Street in New Bedford.2 Ruth attended Parker Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, graduating in 1890.3


Following high school, Ruth attended the Training School for Teachers in New Bedford, graduating in June 1892 with several of her high school classmates.4

Ruth’s first teaching appointment was to Harrington Training School in 1892, where she made $400 per year.5 She soon transferred to Cedar Grove Street Elementary, while also teaching at the Evening Drawing School at Merrimac Street.6
In 1893, Ruth visited Evelyn M. Slocum in Dartmouth, the sister of Ruth’s then-future husband, Albert.7

Ruth’s father, James Henry Pease, died just before Christmas in 1895 at the age of 59.8 He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford.9

Ruth and Albert Wood Slocum were married on 12 July 1899 in New Bedford.10

Their son Horace, was born in 1899 in New Bedford, just before they moved to Billerica, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where Albert worked as an evening overseer at a woolen mill.11 The family next moved to Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where their daughter, Gladys, was born in 1906.12 Ruth, Albert, and their children moved to New Hampshire in the 1910s, where Ruth and Albert remained for the majority of the remainder of their lives.13
Ruth’s brother, James Earle, a dentist, died on 2 March 1931 in New Bedford.14
In 1934, Ruth and Albert traveled to Bermuda, returning to Boston on 30 May 1934 on the S.S. Lady Drake.15

Ruth’s mother, Lucinda C. Perry Pease died in 1935 in New Bedford.16
Albert Wood Slocum died at the age of 71 on 18 January 1939 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida, shortly after moving from Rochester, New Hampshire.17 Albert is buried in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.18

Following Albert’s death, Ruth lived in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.19 Ruth Emma Pease Slocum died 4 November 1965 in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.20

Ruth and Albert’s son, Horace Wood Slocum, died at the age of 68 on 6 October 1968 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina.21 Horace is buried in Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina.22

Ruth and Albert’s daughter, Gladys C. Slocum Hunt Leith, died on 9 October 1997 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.23
