Coffee Cocktail history

Leo Engel’s American and Other Drinks, published in 1878, contains a Criterion Coffee Punch recipe consisting of coffee, egg, and brandy – similar to the Swank Coffee Cocktail recipe if Cointreau is swapped for the egg.

A different Coffee Cocktail recipe was quite popular in the late 1800s that actually contained no coffee. This Coffee Cocktail consisted of brandy, port, and sugar, then topped with nutmeg. Interestingly, in Savannah, Georgia in 1891, it was suggested the cocktail appropriate for “younger members of the the family” by adding a bit more ice and serving it in a smaller glass

Reminiscent of liquor-filled candy, the Coffee Cocktail is a bit sweet. Not really our thing but, for those that like those confections, this may hit the spot.
