Ralph Russell Phillis was born on 6 August 1896 in Cambridge Township, Guernsey County, Ohio to John C. Phillis and Julia A. Thomas.1 When Ralph was eight, his family moved from Cambridge to Caney, Montgomery County, Kansas, and then a few laters about 20 miles south to Dewey, Washington County, Oklahoma.2

Ralph excelled in school in Dewey and entered high school in 1910.3

In 1909, the Phillis family had a Thanksgiving celebration and homecoming as Ralph’s older brothers, Charlie and Boyce, came home after extensive travels. 4

A few years later, the family moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.5 Ralph’s father, John, died on 30 January 1918 in Chicago and is buried in Montrose Cemetery.6 At the time, John was working for Yellow Cab and living with his parents at 510 Grant Place, flat 19, in Chicago.7 The following year, Ralph and his mother, Julia, returned to Oklahoma to visit family.8

After their father’s death, Ralph and Clarence continued living with their mother, and Howard, who had married, lived next door.9 Julia A. Thomas Phillis died on 20 March 1927 in Chicago and is buried in Montrose Cemetery.10

After his mother’s death, Ralph lived at the Vogt Hotel on Adams, then moved to 5 Carpenter St before 1935, living and working as the boarding house houseman until the mid-1940s.11

Ralph married Mae Pabis in the mid-1940s and lived at 1014 W 19 in Chicago.12

Sadly, Ralph died at the age of 52 only a few years later on 14 Oct 1948 in Chicago and is buried in Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island, Cook County, Illinois.13

Mae continued living at 1014 W 19 in Chicago and remarried on 11 May 1949 to Elmer W. Charlson in Cook County, Illinois.14 

Mae died only a few years later on 1 May 1952 at the age of 39.15 Mae Pabis Phillis Charlson is buried with her family in St. Adalberts Cemetery in Niles, Cook County, Illinois.16

12. No marriage record has been located. Ralph’s 1948 death record lists his wife as Mae. In 1942, when Ralph registered for the draft, he listed his employer, Mrs. Stark, as his contact, not Mae, so it is probable he had not married at that time, placing the marriage most likely between 1942 and 1948. In 1946, Ralph’ address in the white pages was 1014 W. 19, the same as Mae’s in her 1952 death notice.
