William Henry Atwood was born 15 June 1871 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to William W. Atwood and Martha C. Rogers.1 During his childhood, William lived with his parents and grandmother, Hannah Rogers, at 100 Pleasant Street in New Bedford and William and attended Parker Street Grammar School.2

William served as salutatorian when he graduated in 1890 from New Bedford High School.3

Following high school, William married one of his high school classmates, Elizabeth Heppenstall.4

The couple were soon parents to a son, James Campbell, born in 1895.5 At the turn of the century, the family was living at 32 Sycamore Street in New Bedford and William was working as a clerk at Twist Drill Company in New Bedford.6

Tragically, William became ill and died at the age of 31 on 3 April 1903 in New Bedford.7

William’s mother, Martha C. Rogers Atwood, died the following year in New Bedford and is buried in Rural Cemetery.8 Following their deaths, William’s wife, Elizabeth, son, James Campbell, and father, William W., lived together, eventually moving to Oakland, Alameda County, California, where the elder William died in 1921.9

Elizabeth remained in Oakland until her death in 1955.10

William and Elizabeth’s son, James Campbell, lived in Oakland throughout his life. James died in 1982 in Alameda County at the age of 87.11
