Elizabeth “Lizzie” Heppenstall was born on 14 August 1871 in Woonsocket, Providence County, Rhode Island to Joseph Heppenstall and Mary Ann Teagle.1 Elizabeth’s sister, Mary May, was born in 1874; their mother died near the time of Mary May’s birth.2 In 1880, Lizzie and Mary May, were each living with different grandparents in Woonsocket; Lizzie with her mother’s parents and Mary May with her father’s parents.3

By 1889, Lizzie and her father, Joseph, were living in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Lizzie’s father was working as a superintendent at Oneko Mills and lived at 1017 Acushnet Avenue.4 Lizzie had her photo taken by John O’Neil in New Bedford, circa 1890.5 It is unknown if Lizzie’s sister Mary May joined them in Massachusetts; Mary May married Baxter Arnold in Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1895.6
Lizzie attended Parker Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, graduating in 1890.7


Elizabeth married William Henry Atwood on 9 December 1894 in New Bedford; William was also a graduate of New Bedford High School and had served as salutatorian of the class of 1890.8


Elizabeth and William were soon parents to a son, James Campbell, born 23 July 1895 in New Bedford.9 In 1900, the family was living at 32 Sycamore Street and William was working as a clerk at the Twist Drill Company.10 Tragically, William died at the age of 31 in 1903.11

In 1910, Elizabeth and James were living with Elizabeth’s father-in-law, William W. Atwood, at 244 Pleasant Street in New Bedford.12 By 1920, William, Elizabeth, and James had moved to Oakland, Alameda County, California, and were living near Elizabeth’s sister, May, and her family.13
William Atwood died at the age of 76 on 30 December 1921 in Oakland.14

Elizabeth and May’s father, Joseph Heppenstall, died in 1926 in Rhode Island and is buried in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.15 Following William Atwood’s death, Elizabeth lived with her sister, May, and May’s family, and then alone, in Oakland.16 May Heppenstall Arnold St. John died 11 August 1952.17
Elizabeth Heppenstall Atwood died at the age of 84 on 22 November 1955 in Oakland, California.18

William and Elizabeth’s son, James Campbell, lived in Oakland throughout his life. James died in 1982 in Alameda County at the age of 87.19

Note: It is highly unlikely that baby Mary was born 8 days after her mother, Mary, died (birth record, 28 Feb 1874). Sources for baby Mary’s birth date range from 24 Jan – 28 Feb. As an adult, Mary used the names May Maude and her social security listed a birth date of 24 Jan 1874.
