Cyrus Chapman Howland (1871–1920)

Cyrus Chapman Howland was born 19 March 1871 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Frank H. Howland and Caroline D. Chapman.1 He had one known sister, Blanche, who was born in 1872.2 During Cyrus’ childhood, Cyrus and his family lived at 152 Grinnel Street in New Bedford and attended Fifth Street Grammar School.3

Clark attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and then worked with the engineering department in New Bedford. While riding his bicycle in Boston in 1894 , Cyrus was badly injured in an accident.4

Cyrus married Maude M. Smith of Cambridge on 31 January 1899 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.5 After their marriage, Cyrus and Maude lived with his parents, sister, Blanche, and aunt, Anne Chapman, at 39 Waumbeck Street in Roxbury in Boston.6 Cyrus’ father, Frank H. Howland, died in 1905.7

By 1910, Cyrus and Maude were living at 140 Bridge Street in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, where Cyrus was working as a civil engineer.8 Around 1918, Cyrus moved to the Taunton State Hospital, where he died at the age of 48 on 23 February 1920.9

Cyrus Chapman Howland is buried in Friends Burying Ground, New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.10 Maude never remarried, living until 5 April 1960.11
