Blanche Russell Howland was born 29 September 1872 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Frank H. Howland and Caroline D. Chapman.1 She had one known brother, Cyrus, who was born in 1871.2

As a child, Blanche lived at 152 Grinnel Street in New Bedford with her parents and brother and attended Fifth Street Grammar School.3 Blanche attended New Bedford High School and, in 1887, was a member of the Plantagenets society; she is fifth from the right in the photograph.4

Blanche graduated in 1890 from New Bedford High School.5

Blanche attended Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts from 1892-1894.6 In 1900, Blanche was teaching music and living with her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Cyrus and Maude, and her aunt, Anne Chapman, at 39 Waumbeck Street in Boston.7 Blanche’s father, Frank H. Howland, died in 1905.8

After her father’s death, Blanche lived with her mother in Boston, working in the oil business.9 Blanche’s mother, Caroline Denham Chapman Howland, died at the age of 85 on 12 February 1930 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.10

Blanche lived in Cambridge, then Boston, then Brookline until her death on 20 June 1947 in Brookline at the age of 74.11 Blanche Russell Howland is buried in Friends Burying Ground in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.12
