The origin of the King Alphonse cocktail is unknown. However, the King Alphonse cocktail appeared in Hon. William T. Boothby’s “Cocktail Bill” Boothby’s World Drinks and How to Mix Them, published in 1934 on page 241:
King Alphonse
Creme de Cocoa 3/4 jigger
Cream 1/4 jigger
Carefully float cream over liqueur in chilled pousse cafe glass and serve.

Fill liqueur glass 3/4 full with Dark Creme de Cacao. Float 1/3 Cream on top and serve.

It doesn’t get much easier to make than the King Alphonse although a steady hand is required to float the cream with out it mixing. A grown-up after-dinner chocolate milk that is quite enjoyable.
