Gin and Tonic cocktail history
Tonic water, another beverage with a history of treating malaria using quinine, dates back hundreds of years. As Mary Poppins taught us, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…” – or, in the case of quinine, water, sugar, lime and gin added to the quinine (i.e., a gin and tonic) helped the medicine go down.

Tonic water was the cause of my several decades of gin abstinence. My first exposures to gin were in gin and tonics, which I detested, so I blamed it on the gin. It was the tonic water. Neither of us is a fan of a gin and tonic, but I really, really don’t like it.
