Gertie’s Garter cocktail history
In 1883, a farce entitled Gertie’s Garter debuted on the 12th of April in Newcastle upon Tyne starring Miss Maggie Hunt, who played Gertie Mooney, as well as Mr. E. H.. Sothern, playing Mr. Pocklington, and Mr. J. Owen as Melch’sedeck Flighty.

About four decades later in 1921, a play entitled Getting Gertie’s Garter began its run in New York. In 1945, Getting Gertie’s Garter was made into a movie starring Dennis O’Keefe, Marie McDonald, and Barry Sullivan.

It is unknown, but highly possible, that the Gertie’s Garter cocktail had an association with one of the plays or the movie.

We typically love cocktails with grapefruit juice but this version of Gertie’s Garter was a bit too sweet for 5🍸s. Less grenadine would most likely be the remedy; we will try a less sweet version soon. it is a very pretty beverage.
