Blue Devil cocktail history

First mentions of The Blue Devil, a drink that looks purely tropical, are found in London, England and Clovis, New Mexico.

In 1930, Harry Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book included a Blue Devil cocktail recipe on page 31 and, in 1938, a Blue Devil recipe was published in the Evening Standard in London.

In 1935, The Clovis Hotel’s Dream Bar in New Mexico offered a Blue Devil cocktail for 30 cents.

1/2 Dry Gin, 1/4 Maraschino, 1/4 Lemon or Lime juice, 1 dash Blue Vegetable color. Shake well with ice and strain into glass.

Ingredients used:

  • Hendrick’s Gin
  • Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • Fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • A few drops of blue food coloring
