Sarah Elizabeth Kelley was born 5 January 1873 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Charles S. Kelley and Sarah Anthony.1 Elizabeth descended from a long line of New Englanders dating back to the 1600s and the Mayflower.2

As a child, Sarah Elizabeth lived with her parents and siblings, Carrie and Charles, at 232 Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford and attended Fifth Street Grammar School.3 Sarah Elizabeth was a member of the Plantagenets society in high school; she is pictured fifth from the left in the first photo. She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1890.4

Elizabeth married Mayhew R. Hitch on 19 June 1895 in New Bedford and the couple made their home at 119 Mill Street in New Bedford.5

The couple had two known children, Mayhew Jr. and Sarah.6 Mayhew and Sarah lived their entire lives in New Bedford.7

Sarah’s mother, Sarah Anthony Kelley, died in 1922 in New Bedford and is buried in Rural Cemetery.8

Mayhew and Sarah and their children, Mayhew and Sarah, traveled to Europe in 1928, returning to New York in August of 1928.9

In 1935, Sarah and Mayhew attended her 45th high school reunion; Sarah is pictured on the very left of the back row and Judge Mayhew Hitch is on the far right of the fourth row.10

Sarah’s father, Charles Sampson Kelley died at the age of 90 in 1937 in New Bedford. He is buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford.11

Judge Mayhew Robinson Hitch died at the age of 89 on 8 September 1956 in New Bedford.12 Sarah Elizabeth Kelley Hitch died at the age of 96 on 13 April 1959 in New Bedford.13 They are buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.14

Sarah and Mayhew’s children

Mayhew Robinson Hitch Jr. died at the age of 77 on 23 August 1978 in New Bedford and is buried in Rural Cemetery.15

Sarah Hitch died on 22 July 1980 at the age of 75 in New Bedford and is buried in Rural Cemetery.16
