Ray Greene Huling was born on 15 October 1847 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island to John Greene Huling and Huldah Sherman Wilcox.1

Ray spent his childhood in Providence with his parents, where his father worked as a carpenter.2 Ray attended Brown University, graduating in 1869.3

Following college, Ray lived in Providence with his parents and accepted an assistant teaching position in Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts in 1869.4

Ray’s father, John Greene Huling Jr., was killed in a fall while working in Carondelet, St. Louis, Missouri on 9 May 1871.5 He is buried in Locust Grove Cemetery in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.6

In 1875, Ray obtained a passport to travel to Great Britain and Europe with his future brothers-in-law, Walter and Sidney Paine.7 His return was quite eventful, as the steamship upon which he was traveling from Glasgow, Scotland became disabled at sea; the S.S. Ethiopia finally arrived in New York on the 27th of September.8

Ray left Fall River in 1875, accepting a position as High School Principal in Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts.9

On 10 July 1879, Ray married Ellen Corinna Paine in Fall River, Massachusetts.10 The couple welcomed their first daughter, Ellen Paine Huling, on 24 July 1880, and their second, Elizabeth Lillibridge Huling, on 7 Dec 1882, both born in Fitchburg.11 Their third daughter, Alice Borden Huling, was born on 2 Sept 1885 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, although the family was still residing in Fitchburg.12

The family moved back to Bristol County to New Bedford in 1886 when Ray became principal of the New Bedford High School and soon welcomed the fourth daughter to the family, Corrine Wilcox Huling, born in 10 Jan 1888.13

A son, Ray Greene Huling Jr., joined the family on 13 July 1890, born in Iberville, Canada.14 In 1893, following a summer vacation that included time in Rhode Island, Canada, and a visit to the World’s Fair in Chicago, the family moved to Cambridge. Middlesex County, Massachusetts where Ray became Headmaster of the Cambridge English High School.15

In 1896, Ray’s wife, Ellen Corinaa Paine Huling died at the age of 45 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island.16 Her funeral was held in Cambridge and she is buried in Newton Cemetery in Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.17

Following Ellen’s death, Ray lived in Cambridge with his mother and children.18 Ray’s mother, Huldah Sherman Wilcox Huling, died in 1905 and is buried in Locust Grove Cemetery in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.19

Ray and Ellen’s eldest daughter, Ellen, a teacher, writer, lecturer, and traveler, died at the age of 34, on 25 April 1914.20 Ellen Paine Huling is buried is buried in in Newton Cemetery in Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.21

Ray Greene Huling died the following year on 4 September at his summer home in Reshame, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts at the age of 67.22 Ray is also buried in the family plot in Newton Cemetery.23

Ray and Ellen Huling’s Children

In 1920, Elizabeth, Alice, Corrine, and Corrine’s husband, Dana Gallup, travelled to France, Switzerland, Belgium, and England, leaving New York on 17 July 1920 and returning to New York on 30 August 1920.24

Ray Greene Huling Jr (1890-1922)

Ray Greene Huling Jr. was killed at the age of 30 when struck by a horse on 22 May 1922 near his home in Newton, Massachusetts.25 He is buried in the family plot in Newton.26

Corrine Wilcox Huling Gallup (1888-1964)

Corrine Wilcox Huling married Col. Dana Taylor Gallup on 19 December 1919 in Cambridge, Massachsuetts.27 Corrine died at the age of 76 on 9 April 1964 in Cambridge.28 She is buried with her husband, Dana, who died in 1943, in Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic, New London County, Connecticut.29

Elizabeth Lillibridge Huling (1882-1973)

Elizabeth Lillibridge Huling died at the age of 91 on 28 December 1973 in Cambridge and is bured in the family plot in Newton Cemetery in Newton.30

Alice Borden Huling (1885-1976)

The last surving of the Huling children, Alice Borden Huling, died on 28 May 1976 in Cambridge at the age of 90.31 Alice is also buried in the family plot in Newton Cemtery in Newton, Massachusetts.32
