Leonard Clifton Lapham was born 26 September 1871 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Josheia G. Lapham and Ellen Potter.1

Leonard attended Fifth Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, where was a member of the 1888 baseball team; he is standing, in the center, third from the left in the photo. Leonard graduated from New Bedford High School in 1890.2

As a young man, Leonard worked as a bookkeeper at a mill and lived with his parents, sister, Sophia, aunt, Elizabeth Howland, and cousin, Grace Potter, at 183 Pleasant Street in New Bedford.3

On 27 September 1907, Leonard married Caroline Brownell, the widow of Minot G. Shaw, in New Bedford.4 The couple soon moved to 36 Madison Street in New Bedford and Leonard and Caroline took a ten-day vacation with friends to Virginia in 1909. By 1910, Leonard held the title of Treasurer at Nonquitt Spinning Company.5

About 1914, Leonard and Caroline moved to Fairhaven, Bristol County, Massachusetts.6 In 1915, Leonard’s father, Josheia G. “Joshua” Lapham, died at the age of 82 and is buried in South Dartmouth Cemetery in Dartmouth.7

In 1921, Leonard was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Union Street Railway and the New Bedford and Onset Street Railway Company.8

Caroline Brownell Lapham died at the age of 49 on 26 January 1929 in Fairhaven.9

Leonard’s mother, Ellen M. Potter Lapham, died on 10 June 1924 in Fairhaven at the age of 84.10

Leonard Clifton Lapham died at the age of 56 on 26 January 1929 in New Bedford.11 Leonard and Caroline are buried in South Dartmouth Cemetery in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts with many members of Leonard’s family.12
