James Stowe Macomber was born in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, most likely on 30 April 1870 to James P. Macomber and Maria L. Rooth.1

In his childhood, James lived at 99 Pleasant Street in New Bedford with his parents and half-brother, William.2 James attended Parker Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, graduating in 1890.3

By 1900, James’ step-sister, Myra, and her children, Ruth, Marjory, and Alice, had joined the family’s residence, now located at 245 Pleasant Street.4 Following the death of his father, James P. Macomber, in 1905, and his mother, Maria L. Rooth Macomber, in 1906, James lived with his step-sister, her children, and his mother’s sister, Harriet Rooth.5

On 26 October 1910, James married Bessie Matilda Harwood in New Bedford.6 The couple had one son, Richard, in 1918, and the family lived at 10 Round Street, where James and Bessie would reside for the remainder of their lives.7

Bessie Matilda Harwood Macomber died in 1954 and James Stowe Macomber died in 1958, both in New Bedford.8

James and Bessie’s son, Richard Stowe Macomber, died at the age of 79 in 1998.9

No birth record was found for James S. Macomber in a page by page search of New Bedford 1870 births. The 1870 census was taken when he was 1 month old. His social security records states a birth of 30 April 1872 in New Bedford; it would not be possible for the birth year to be 1872 if he was enumerated in 1870. Additionally, James was enumerated in 1900 with a birth month and year of Apr 1870.
