Gertrude Alice Smith was born 6 August 1870 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Alfred E. Smith and Louisa A. Parker.1

Gertrude had three known siblings, William, and two that died as infants, Josephine and Alfred.2 Josephine and Alfred are both buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.3

When Gertrude was only seven, her mother, Louisa A. Parker Smith, died at the age of 33 on 18 November 1877 in New Bedford from childbirth complications.4 Louisa is buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.5

In 1880, Gertrude and William were living at 65 High Street in New Bedford with their father, Alfred, and Susan P. Dillingham, the half-sister of their father’s second wife, Hannah.6 Alfred Smith and Hannah Nye Dillingham married on 15 June 1880 in New Bedford.7 Alfred and Hannah had three known children, Grace, Helen, and Sydney.8

Gertrude attended Middle Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, receiving a certificate in 1890.9

Following high school, Gertrude moved to Boston where she lived and worked as a nurse for decades.10

Gertrude’s father, Alfred E. Smith, died at the age of 88 in New Bedford in 1926.11 Gertrude’s brother, William Ernest Smith, died in 1933.12

Gertrude’s half-sister, Grace D. Smith, also a nurse, died in 1937 in Tewksbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts at the age of 53.13

Gertrude Alice Smith died at the age of 81 on 5 April 1952 in Brookline, Norfolk County., Massachusetts.14

Gertrude’s half-sister, Helen Holbrook Smith McKenzie, died in Middlesex County, Massachusetts in 1973.15

Gertrude’s half-brother, Sydney Freeman Smith, died at the age of 87 on 6 May 1980 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.16
