Arthur Stone Ashley was born 7 October 1872 in Auburn, Worcester County, Massachusetts to Silas Ashley and Delia M. Wayland/Whalen.1 The family soon moved to New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, and, in 1880, Arthur, his parents, and his brother, Edward, were living at 602 Purchase Street.2 Arthur attended Parker Street Grammar School, then New Bedford High School, graduating in 1890.3

On 20 September 1894, Arthur married Nettie J. Fisher in New Bedford.4

The couple had four known children, May, Edward, Milton, and Vivian.5

1916 was a busy year for the Ashley family. Arthur purchased the clothing store where he was a manager, The MacLeod Credit Company, at 866 Purchase Street, and Arthur and Nettie’s daughter, May, married Richard Knowles on the 27th of September.6

Arthur’s mother, Delia M. Wayland/Whalen Ashley, died in 1920, and his father, Silas Edmund Ashley, died in 1927. Both are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford.7

Arthur and Nettie remained in New Bedford for the remainder of their lives.8

Their sons, Edward Stone Ashley, died in 1947 at the age of 51, and Milton Earl Ashley, died in 1965 at the age of 67.9

Their daughter, Vivian Norma Ashley Olean died in 1984 at the age of 82.10 It is unknown when and where May Fisher Ashley Knowles died.11

Arthur Stone Ashley died at the age of 58 in 1930 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.12 Nettie Josephine Fisher Ashley died at the age of 74 on 9 April 1948 in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island.13 Arthur and Nettie are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford.14
