Alice Gertrude Anthony was born 13 October 1872 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts to Arthur S. Anthony and Mary Ella L. Ellis.1 Alice was the granddaughter of Edmund Anthony, founder of three newspapers, including the New Bedford Standard.2

In her childhood, Alice lived with her parents at 87 Fourth Street in New Bedford and attended Fifth Street Grammar School.3Alice attended New Bedford High School, receiving a certificate in 1890, and was a member of the Plantagenets society; she is pictured seventh from the right in the photo.4

Alice was an accomplished pianist, performing on many occasions and also teaching in the New Bedford area.5

In 1906, Alice joined the local musician’s union in order to perform in a production of The Pirates of Penzance. Her acceptance into the union as a female was conditional that her membership would only last one week.6

Alice taught piano and voice lessons, never married, and lived with her mother in New Bedford throughout her life.7

Alice’s father, Arthur S. Anthony died in 1923 in Acushnet, Bristol County, Massachusetts.8

Alice’s mother, Mary Ella Loring Ellis Anthony, died in 1940 in Acushnet, Bristol County, Massachusetts.9

Alice Gertrude Anthony died in 1937 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.10
