What is a source timeline?
A source timeline is a list of sources with dates, abstracts, and the source location in a timeline format, grouped by year, decade, and century.
Source timeline example:
1880-1889
Surname | First | Prev Gen | Location Type | Source, abstract & notes | Date | Film/Path | Img |
1884 | |||||||
Phillis | John Riley | John B. | Noble County Ohio Probate | Noble County Probate Estate Packets John R. Phillis administrator for Hugh Darrah estate, loose pages, re: estate no. 290-29, filed 3 Sept 1884, book 5, p. 21. | 3 Sept 1884 | 104956371 | 467 |
The file location is https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/104956371, image 467.
Note: You must be logged in to Family Search.
Source timeline benefits
A source timeline is like an organized shoebox. As registers, deed books, etc. are explored, all Phillis records found are recorded in the source timeline regardless if a relationship has been identified at that time. Other surnames are recorded in the source timeline for that surname.
It has been said one should always assume at least two people with the same name are living in the same location at the same. As the timeline grows, the clustering of names and locations in a time period helps identify and differentiate the people.
Using the source timelines
Surname, First name
A standardized version of the surname, along with the full given name. For example:
- Random surname variations/misspellings, such as Fillis, Philis, etc,. are standardized to Phillis.
- Records are listed in alphabetical order by year.
If the name is bolded, it indicates the record is a direct line ancestor of the author.
Book/Source, Page: Identifier of where the original record is found.
- If a County Book, such as a deed book, the County and Book or Volume number, then page number.
- If a census record, the Census and page number(s).
- If a file of loose papers, as in a court case, the source, county and case number and the total number of papers/pages is listed in the page column.
Abstract & notes: The spelling of the name in the record as it was recorded, the county and state where the record was recorded, a brief description of the record. In the case of obituaries, the source information is included in this field. Dates are identified in the record, such as document date and recording date.
Date: The date of the document if it is available, otherwise, the recording date. Deeds are typically written on one date and recorded at a later date. The deed date is typically what appears in this column.
Film/File, Img: For online sources, the method of accessing the document/file.
As Family Search is a free service, whenever possible, Family Search films are used as the source, whether the record is available online or can be accessed at a Family Search affiliate library. If only a number is listed in this field, it is the Film number/DGS number. To access the record, use the URL:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/ and add the number at the end of the URL.
For example, 005155889 would be https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/005155889
The number in the img column is the image number. After arriving at the film, enter the image number in the upper left-hand field and the referenced record will display.
Court files
Case files are listed in the timeline based on the case year, which is typically when the case was settled unless the date the lawsuit was filed is found. For example, Case 1834-064 was filed 23 Feb 1830; it is found in 1830 in the timeline. If the filed date had not been available, it would have been entered in 1834. It should also be noted that many of the estate cases are years or decades after the death of the estate’s owner.
Other websites. The path to reach the document is noted.
