Lydia Ann Chadwick was born on 4 July 1807 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts to John Chadwick and Lydia Whiton Chadwick.1 The youngest of the Chadwick girls, Lydia joined her older sisters, Mary Barlow Chadwick, age five, and Sarah Lincoln Chadwick, age two.2 Lydia’s brother, Moses, had died in 1802.3

As a toddler, Lydia’s family lived in on Prince Street in Ward 1 (near the Paul Revere House).4 However, by 1820, the family had moved to North Allen Street in Ward 6 (the current location of Massachusetts General Hospital).5

As a young lady, Lydia’s minister gave her a small book, The Peace Catechism on Christian Principles by Philo Pacificus, printed in Boston in 1816. The outside of the book is covered in a Boston Globe newspaper dated 17 May 1819. Handwriting on the outside of the book reads, “Lydia A. Chadwick from her minister,” and the first page of the Preface has handwriting with her name, “Lydia Ann Chadwick.”

Additionally, beginning with pages 18-19, six sets of pages contain a leaf.6
