Winifred Louise Hooper Rosenbaum Stevens (1900–1991)

Winifred Louise Hooper was born 2 May 1900 in Trenton, Missouri to John H. Hooper and Bash Kathryn Nichols.1

Winifred Louise’s parents

John H. Hooper

John H. Hooper was born in Grundy County, Missouri in 1861, the son of James and Emily Hooper.2 John Hooper and Bash Nichols were married 24 Oct 1895 in Grundy County.3 John H. Hooper died at the age of 87 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.4 John Hooper is buried in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg, Missouri.5

Basheba “Bash” Kathryn Nichols

Basheba “Bash” Kathryn Nichols was born 16 July 1867 in Grundy County, Missouri to George Washington Nichols and Louisa Patten.6 Bash lived with her parents, and her siblings in Grundy County, where she met and married John H. Hooper in 1895.7

Bash Nichols Hooper died suddenly 3 Mar 1940 in Trenton, Grundy County, Missouri.8 She is buried in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg, Missouri.9

John and Bash Hooper?

It is possible the unmarked photo of the couple found in the Winifred Louise Hooper photos are her parents. The female bears a strong resemblance to the female in the family photo (below) identified as “Mama.”

Winifred Louise’s siblings

As a baby, and at times throughout her life, Winifred used her middle name of Louise as a first name.10 Winifred Louise had three known siblings, a sister, Beulah, who died at birth or as an infant on 5 Apr 1889, one brother, Robert Herman (1906-1988), and one sister, Wilma (1909-1976).11 In 1910, the family was living in Madison Township in Grundy County, Missouri with Bash’s father, Washington Nichols.12

Winifred Louise married Glen W. Rosenbaum in 1918 in Grundy County, Missouri and the couple began their marriage living with Glen’s parents in Madison Township.13 Winifred Louise and Glen Rosenbaum had two known daughters, Mary Louise and Wanda Lee.14 Mary Louise Rosenbaum Francis died 13 Jan 2013 and is buried in Austin, Texas.15 Wanda Lee Rosenbaum Rimer died 18 Aug 2018 and is buried in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.16

Winifred Louise married second to Owen C. Stevens on 4 Apr 1954 in Springfield, Missouri.17

Winifred Louise Hooper Rosenbaum Stevens died on 11 Sept 1991 in Springfield, Missouri and is buried in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.18

The presence of Mary Elizabeth Sealock Hooper dates the photo, as she died on 26 February 1912.19 Combined with the estimated age of Winifred Louise Hooper, who was born in 1900, the photo is most likely ca. 1911.

Nancy Elizabeth “Nannie” Hooper was born 15 Oct 1865 in Missouri to James Hooper and Emily Graham.20 Nannie E. Hooper married William J. Phillips on 7 Jan 1891 in Grundy County, Missouri.21

Nancy Elizabeth Hooper Phillips died on 13 June 1943 and is buried in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.22

Uncle Bob: Robert Lee Nichols

Robert Lee Nichols was born 10 Nov 1864 to George Washington Nichols and Louise Patten.23 Robert grew up with his siblings in Madison Township in Grundy County, Missouri where his father was a farmer.24

Robert and his brother, Harry P., moved to Garfield, Finney County, Kansas, sometime between 1900 and 1910, where they farmed together until sometime in the 1920s. By 1930, Robert was back living in Madison Township in Missouri, working as a farm laborer and living with the Stephenson family.25

Robert married Margaret “Maggie” Leeper Knight on 19 Sept 1934 in Livingston County, Missouri.26

Robert Lee Nichols died at the age of 87 on 7 May 1951 in Trenton, Grundy County, Missouri and is buried in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.27

Uncle Jim: James T. Hooper

James T. Hooper (1861-1933),

James T. Hooper was born 13 Dec 1861 in Missouri, the son of James Hooper and Emily Graham.28

James married Mary Elizabeth Sealock on 5 May 1886 in Grundy County, Missouri.29 The couple had five children, Homer Henry, Ruby Lee, and three who died at birth or in childhood.30

Sadly, Mary died in 1912.31 James never remarried and lived the remainder of his life with his daughter, Ruby.32 James T. Hooper died at the age of 67 on 7 Sept 1933 in Trenton,Grundy County, Missouri and is buried in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.33

Florence May Hooper

Florence May Hooper was born 30 October 1859 in Grundy County, Missouri to James Hooper and Emily Graham.34 Florence’s mother, Emily, died in 1869, and Florence and her siblings, James, John, and Nancy, lived with their father and grandfather after their mother’s death in Madison Township in Grundy County.35

Florence married Rev. Samuel David Gose on 24 July 1902 in Grundy County.36 Rev. Gose died of typhoid fever in 1910.37 Florence May Hooper Gose died on 5 Mar 1941 in Grants, Cibola County, New Mexico at the age of 81 and is buried in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.38

Aunt Mary: Mary Elizabeth Sealock Hooper

Mary Elizabeth Sealock was born 18 August 1865 in Grundy County, Missouri to William A. Sealock and Sarah A. Brandom.39 Mary and James T. Hooper were married in Grundy County, Missouri on 5 May 1886.40 The couple had five children, Homer Henry, Ruby Lee, and three who died at birth or in childhood.41

Mary Elizabeth Sealock Hooper died 26 Feb 1912 and is buried in Edinburg Cemetery, in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.42

Aunt Pet: Laura “Pet” Nichols Witten

Laura “Pet” Nichols was born 16 Sep 1859 in Missouri to George Washington Nichols and Louisa E. Patten.43

Pet married Thomas R. Witten on 23 Nov 1881 in Grundy County, Missouri.44 The couple had two known sons, Guy and Paul.45 Tragically, Thomas was killed in a train wreck in 1903.46

Laura “Pet” Nichols Witten died on 3 Nov 1926 in Moberly, Randolph County, Missouri and is buried in Edinburg Cemetery, Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.47

Ruby Lee Hooper McKemy

Ruby Lee Hooper was born 7 Jan 1900 in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri to James T. Hooper and Mary Elizabeth Sealock.48

Ruby and her brother, Homer Henry, grew up in Madison Township in Grundy County, Missouri.49 At the age of 20, Ruby was working as a teacher and living with her father.50

Ruby soon married Orah “Stanley” McKemy and they had four known children, James, Donald, who died in 1940, Orah, and Harold.51 Stanley died on 12 Nov 1973 in Trenton, Missouri.52

Ruby Hooper McKemy died on 11 July 1981 in Shawnee, Kansas and is buried in Edinburg Cemetery, in Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri.53
