Tell us a bit about your genealogy/family history journey

I started my research on Jan. 30, 2020. I was in a productivity program that asks us to take weekends off from work. So, I was looking for a weekend activity that would be fun and could occupy me during that time. So, I collected my Grampie’s old research and got to collecting records and I’ve been working on it just about every day since. I decided in Feb. 2021 to start sharing my findings in video form on Youtube, wrote a business plan, quit a PhD program, and started posting in August of that year. All of this has brought to me a better understanding of my history, my family, and why we go through the world in the way we do. I see so much continuity across the generations and I love that.

Surnames of interest

All of the common Welsh names: Davies, Williams, Thomas, Morgan, Rees, Griffith, Lloyd, James, Walters, and a much less common one, Samson.

If you could meet one person from your family tree that died before you were born, who would it be and why?

I’d love to meet my Grampie’s Uncle Dai. Every story about him begins with “Uncle Dai was such a good person.” He fed the family with his gardens when everyone was unemployed. He grew blue roses. He cared for and watched over my Grampie when he was young. He urged that my Grampie return to Canada because he noticed how homesick my Grandma was. He just worked really hard to make the lives of his loved ones better.

Favorite place where you’ve traveled

Cuenca, Ecuador

From a genealogy/family history research perspective, what would you have done differently?

Nothing. I love being able to see my growth over time as I get better at analysing records, making diagrams, and representing my ancestors. My goal isn’t to do genealogy perfectly, but to create a long-term, sustainable project that could support my own healing.

What are you currently working on and what’s next?

My current focus is turning my research into fun, educational videos for the Youtube. In terms of my own research, I’ve been spending a lot of time on my ancestors in the Lampeter area in Cardiganshire. I’m also working on a fully cited family tree for my Rev. Timothy Davies one name study.
